With money he had saved, he made a down payment on a dump truck and started in the hauling business out of Whittier, California and the granite sites of the Hollywood Hills. His greatest interest was in the construction business. He was a born builder. His motto was, “Build so well as to earn repeat business.” In 1931 he formed the A.S. Vinnell Company and did grading and paving contracts in the Los Angeles area. He eventually became President of the Vinnell Corporation, an organization engaged on a global scale in diversified multi-million dollar operations. At the time of his death, the Vinnell Corporation ranked among the top fifty contractors in the United States. His interest in ASU started in 1948 when he had a sub-office in Phoenix. His vision and foresight led to the development of Sun City – the first major retirement community in the country. The idea not only transformed the Phoenix area, but had a major effect on the sociology of a vast number of Americans who were approaching “retirement” age. Del E. Webb was the major force in developing “active retirement” living. He was most proud of the many young people he personally sponsored and developed in building his company. His deep concern for young people prompted the Directors of the Del E. Webb Foundation to establish the endowment in his name. The objective is to identify, recognize and reward the most outstanding upper division construction student with the School’s largest scholarship.
