Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Fall 2006 Admissions Criteria:

All the programs within the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering are divided into two parts. The freshmen and sophomore years of the programs are designated as the pre-professional portion while the junior and senior years are designated as the professional portion. Students in the pre-professional part of a program are only permitted to register for lower-division (100- and 200- level) classes within the school. Promotion from the pre-professional to the professional level is competitive and not automatic (for more details on promotion see Professional Programs).

 

Admission at the Pre-Professional Level:

The admission standards for the Del E. Webb School of Construction exceed those for the university. Except for a small number of freshmen, all students eligible for admission to the School of Construction are admitted at the pre-professional level. This includes all transfer students, all change of majors from outside of the school and all freshmen not directly admitted to the professional level.

New freshmen:

o be admitted to the Del E. Webb School of Construction as a new freshman, in the pre-professional program, the following admissions requirements must be met:

 

Upper 25% of high school class          OR

 

Minimum ACT score of 24 and/or minimum SAT score of 1140      OR

 

ABOR GPA of at least 3.0     AND

 

have completed a college preparation curriculum in math and laboratory science,    AND

 

have a transfer GPA of at least 3.0 for any community college/university course work completed while in high school

 

Transfer Students:

Beginning in the fall 2006 semester:

All new transfer students, if eligible, will be admitted to the pre-professional program. The new admission criteria for all new transfer students are:

For transfer students with more than 24 hours of transferable college credit:

  • a transfer GPA of at least 3.00
  • no high school mathematics or laboratory science deficiencies

    For transfer students with less than 24 hours of transferable college credit: 

  • no high school mathematics or laboratory science deficiencies, 
  • a transfer GPA of at least 3.00

    and
     
  • acceptable High School Aptitude scores (SAT Reasoning (math+verbal) of at least 1140 or composite ACT of at least 24 or Rank of at least 25% or ABOR GPA of at least 3.00  

Direct Admission at the Professional Level:

A few high performing freshmen are admitted directly at the professional level.  Such direct admits still take the freshmen and sophomore courses but do not have to compete for promotion. Directly admitted students who fail to maintain an acceptable academic performance may be demoted back to the pre-professional level.  Direct admission at the professional level is reserved for freshmen who:

  • have completed a college preparation curriculum in math and laboratory science, and
  • have combined Math & Verbal SAT scores = 1400 or Composite ACT scores = 32

    and
     
  • a transfer GPA of at least 3.5 for any community college/university course work completed while in high school.

Pre-Professional vs. Professional:

The pre-professional student follows the first and second-year course requirements outlined in the four-year plan of study which includes all the skill set courses (see below) required for promotion to the professional program. Completion of lower-division requirements does not ensure acceptance to the upper-division program. Pre-professional students are not allowed to register for 300-and 400-level construction courses.
