Abstract:       .  My research will look at one of the top ten-construction projects of the 20th century, identified by the Association of General Contractors, and dissect it to find some of the primary reasons why it failed or succeeded.  I will be researching the Empire State Building.  I will first look at why this project is in the top ten list.  I will then focus my research on some of the challenges that were faced by the people involved in this project.  Challenges that may include finances, technology, manager to crew relations, and design to construction methods.  I will research how they were able to build the tallest building in the world with very limited technological advances.  I will also look at other factors such as politics and unexpected problems.  I will be using published journals and books relating to my topic.  If at all possible I will do some local on-site research to get several opinions on what technology and management styles were and are successful.  This research will provide added information to include in a database system to help prospective developers successfully complete monumental projects.  Users will be able to visit this database and access information about past projects and also receive information on what techniques worked and which to avoid.  Therefore helping the construction industry catch up to the other industries as far as productivity.
