Animal Constructors Inspiring Future Construction Innovations

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Kraig Knutson

Change is Diffucult to deal with because we think we know so much

Abstract:

Can we really look to animal constructors for new, exciting and innovative breakthroughs in construction?  Our aim and intent of this research is to possibly uncover hidden knowledge and techniques that will help the construction world.   Construction knowledge is gained and seasoned through various sources.  Can we improve our types of structures, the materials and methods we use, and the organization of the workforce by studying animals?  Other industries of the world have used animals and insects for years but the construction industry has turned a blind eye to all the advancements that can be attained through the study of animals.  We could definitely improve our technology for phenomenal new age structures and construction methods.

The industry, no doubt, is slowly continuing to evolve and become more effective and unique in the way a building is both designed and constructed.  The only problem is that the construction industry is skeptical of change.  Industry does not have time for practices or techniques that cost too much or take too much time to implement.  Animals have constructed numerous structures for themselves, to near perfection in many cases.  They have provided us tangible models to gaze upon and elaborate on.   Why expend more energy than is needed?  Animals have given us a unique gift of ideas, blueprints, and even examples.  Why not employ what they have done to improve our way of living and our built environment?
