In 2001, with the guidance of Dr. Peterson Zah, Advisor to the ASU President on American Indian Affairs, and Dr. William Badger former Director of the DEWSC, a group of American Indian leaders and members of the DEWSC teamed to form the American Indian Ad Hoc Committee (now formally the Executive Committee). With a vision to establish quality management of construction among American Indian sovereignties, the committee members created the “Construction in Indian Country” (CIIC) conference.
The mission of the conference is to assist in managing construction among American Indian Nations while providing valuable educational opportunities to American Indian students. To accomplish this mission, the conference aims to:
1) educate Tribes and contractors about the realities and opportunities concerning construction in Indian Country;
2) maintain an educational grant and endowment for American Indian students attending Arizona State University’s Del E. Webb School of Construction and
3) provide research and training efforts for Tribal Nations through sponsorships and proceeds from the conference.
The CIIC program is housed within ASU's DEWSC. Founded in 1957, the DEWSC is accredited through the American Council for Construction Education, and one of only three named schools of construction in the country. The school’s mission is to become a national center for construction education, research and technology transfer; to study innovative technologies for implementation in the construction industry; and to promote international relationships. The Del E. Webb School of Construction is a unit within the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering at Arizona State University.
