Martin Alvarez

Martin Alvarez is president of Sun Eagle Corporation, a general engineering and contracting firm headquartered in Chandler, Arizona. Since Mr. Alvarez and his associates founded the firm in 1978, it has completed more than $100 million in construction management and general contracting projects. The company has also maintained consistent and managed growth, while becoming one of the largest minority-owned construction firms in the Southwest. In 1993, Hispanic Business Magazine ranked the firm in the Top Ten Hispanic construction firms in the nation.

In 1978, the company had a bonding capacity of $100,000 and a project size of $10,000 per project. The present bonding capacity is $35,000,000, and construction projects include a $10,500,000 and a $7,100,000 project. Since 1978, the company has completed more than 125 projects. Mr. Alvarez attributes the continued growth and development of the firm to "following a business plan that incorporates sound fiscal policies and a commitment to quality performance." As president, Mr. Alvarez manages and directs the activities of the firm.

Before joining the Sun Eagle Corporation, Mr. Alvarez was affiliated with the Arizona Contractors' Service Center (ACSC) where he managed and directed all financial and managerial activities of that organization. He developed 478 clients for studies for the bonding market, procurement, and market locations for construction related firms. He also administered grants from the Office of Minority Business Enterprise (OMBE) and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

Under the leadership of Mr. Alvarez, Sun Eagle Corporation has received the Construction Safety Award from the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of Interior, for an exemplary accident prevention record; a certificate from the Yuma Proving Ground Fire Department for outstanding fire prevention practices on the project Air Cargo Test Facility at YPG; and the Safe Work Award from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering, L.A. District, for sustained safe work practices. The company has been cited by the Phoenix Urban League for excellence in equal opportunity employment.

Mr. Alvarez is the recipient of many awards for service to the industry. He has been named Contractor of the Year by Avante Minority Business Development Center and by the Tucson Minority Business Development Center. He has received the Outstanding Hispanic Business Achievement Award from the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens, and the Award of Appreciation, Minority Small Business Entrepreneur, from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Active in civic affairs, Mr. Alvarez has served as a coach for Little League Baseball, as a fundraiser for United Way, and as a member of the Board of Directors of Phoenix Day Child Development Center. He is a member of VESTA Club and of the National Association of Minority Contractors.

Mr. Alvarez graduated from Arizona State University with a B.S. in General Business, with an emphasis on management and marketing. He holds both a real estate license and a mortgage license.
