Martin Alvarez
Martin Alvarez is president
of Sun Eagle Corporation, a general engineering and contracting
firm headquartered in Chandler, Arizona. Since Mr. Alvarez and
his associates founded the firm in 1978, it has completed more
than $100 million in construction management and general contracting
projects. The company has also maintained consistent and managed
growth, while becoming one of the largest minority-owned construction
firms in the Southwest. In 1993, Hispanic Business Magazine ranked
the firm in the Top Ten Hispanic construction firms in the nation.
In 1978, the company had a bonding capacity of $100,000 and a
project size of $10,000 per project. The present bonding capacity
is $35,000,000, and construction projects include a $10,500,000
and a $7,100,000 project. Since 1978, the company has completed
more than 125 projects. Mr. Alvarez attributes the continued growth
and development of the firm to "following a business plan
that incorporates sound fiscal policies and a commitment to quality
performance." As president, Mr. Alvarez manages and directs
the activities of the firm.
Before joining the Sun Eagle Corporation, Mr. Alvarez was affiliated
with the Arizona Contractors' Service Center (ACSC) where he managed
and directed all financial and managerial activities of that organization.
He developed 478 clients for studies for the bonding market, procurement,
and market locations for construction related firms. He also administered
grants from the Office of Minority Business Enterprise (OMBE)
and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
Under the leadership of Mr. Alvarez, Sun Eagle Corporation has
received the Construction Safety Award from the Bureau of Reclamation,
U.S. Department of Interior, for an exemplary accident prevention
record; a certificate from the Yuma Proving Ground Fire Department
for outstanding fire prevention practices on the project Air Cargo
Test Facility at YPG; and the Safe Work Award from the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineering, L.A. District, for sustained safe work practices.
The company has been cited by the Phoenix Urban League for excellence
in equal opportunity employment.
Mr. Alvarez is the recipient of many awards for service to the
industry. He has been named Contractor of the Year by Avante Minority
Business Development Center and by the Tucson Minority Business
Development Center. He has received the Outstanding Hispanic Business
Achievement Award from the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens,
and the Award of Appreciation, Minority Small Business Entrepreneur,
from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Active in civic affairs, Mr. Alvarez has served as a coach for
Little League Baseball, as a fundraiser for United Way, and as
a member of the Board of Directors of Phoenix Day Child Development
Center. He is a member of VESTA Club and of the National Association
of Minority Contractors.
Mr. Alvarez graduated from Arizona State University with a B.S.
in General Business, with an emphasis on management and marketing.
He holds both a real estate license and a mortgage license.
